Cactus removal and desert landscaping
How long cactus removal will take will depend on a few factors including: the size and type of cactus, accessibility to the cactus, location, and so forth. In most cases, expect it to take an hour or up to a day.
Small Cacti Usually Take Less Than an Hour
For a small cactus removal job, it’s likely to take you less than an hour, especially if it’s a barrel cactus or other variety known for having a smaller root system. Once you cut it down, it should be fairly easy to dig out the remaining portion of the cactus and haul the debris away.
That said, if the cactus is planted in especially compacted soil, surrounded by rocks, or there’s delicate irrigation lines in the area, it may take you a bit longer.
Larger Cacti Require Section-by-Section Removal
Larger cactus removal will take a bit longer. Especially if it’s a mature cactus that’s up high or growing close to your home or other structures.
Even if it’s a small cactus, however, exercise caution when performing cactus removal. Cactus spines (there’s a decent explainer at https://scientificamerican.com/article/how-to-remove-cactus-spines-from-your-perforated-body) can easily penetrate skin and get stuck there. And even a small section of cactus can be difficult to safely carry.
If your cactus is several feet tall, it’s likely going to take a few hours to remove. The typical timeframe for removing a cactus depends largely on the cactus’s height and number of arms, which shape the realistic scheduling window. Especially if it has many arms that will need to be individually sawed off and the cactus sectioned down in order to remove the whole thing.
The general process for removing a medium-sized cactus:
- Clear an area around the cactus
- Remove arms/higher sections of cactus first
- Saw cactus down
- Dig out/treat root ball
- Collect and remove cactus debris
Allow two to four hours for removal of a medium-sized cactus, especially if hauling away the cactus debris is included. Again, this process could take longer if the cactus is growing in an especially tight area (i.e. a narrow side yard) or surrounded by thick brush or other plants.
Very Large Cacti May Take a Full Day

Large cactus and surrounding landscape
Very large, mature cacti can weigh a surprising amount. Some varieties are known for having especially large root systems, thick trunks, and heavy branches/arms. If there’s a very large cactus growing close to your home, pool, patio cover, or other structures, or even overhead power lines, extra care will need to be taken in the removal process.
Instead of sectioning the cactus and allowing the larger pieces to drop to the ground, for example, the cactus may need to be sawed into smaller pieces or lowered in a controlled manner.
Depending on the situation, cactus removal for a very large cactus could take several hours to a full day. It will likely be quicker if there’s an open area around the cactus so the team has easier access to saw and haul away all the cactus pieces. Access will be more limited, however, if the cactus is growing in an enclosed or tight area. This can make the job a bit more time-consuming.
Of course, this all depends on how much of the cactus can be sawed off and hauled away at a time. If the biggest chunk sawed off is too large to fit through the gate or pathway, for example, more time will be required to saw off even smaller pieces.
Site Constraints Add Time to the Process
Here are a few other things that can add time to the cactus removal process:
- Limited space to park/haul away cactus debris
- Rocky/uneven terrain
- Utility lines/outdoor features
- Irrigation system
- Structures that need to be protected (i.e. windows, walls, roof, hardscape)
- Cactus debris may need to be carried out by hand
Skip This If the Cactus Is Potted
(If you’re reading this and thinking you need to remove a cactus growing in a pot, you can probably stop reading now. It’s unlikely you’re going to need a professional to remove it unless the pot is especially heavy or awkward to move.)
Cleanup
After the cactus is removed, your team will likely need to do some level of cleanup. All cactus pieces/debris should be collected, especially if you have children or pets that spend time outside.
Depending on your city’s rules, and the amount of cactus debris there is to haul away, your team may need to bag the cactus pieces to keep them separate from other yard waste.
Clear the Work Area to Save Time
If you’re hiring a professional to remove a cactus in your yard, there are a couple things you can do to help expedite the process. First, clear the area around the cactus so your removal team has as easy of access as possible. This means moving any and all objects like furniture, planters, vehicles, etc. Second, if you have pets, plan on keeping them inside (or at least out of the immediate area) during the removal process.
Lastly, be sure to ask up front if removing the root ball, hauling away cactus debris, and/or performing yard cleanup are included in the estimate you’re given. Otherwise, you may think you’re only signing up for a quick removal job only to find out it’s turning into a full-day project!
