What You Need to Know about Installing Window Shutters on Oddly-shaped Windows

Shutters are one of the most beautiful window treatments one can have at home and are typically installed on regular shaped windows. What most people don’t realise is that shutters can also be fitted unto unconventionally-shaped windows which include slanted and arched window designs.

Most people think that there is no way traditional shutter frames would fit in windows with unique shapes and designs which is not necessarily the case. Many shutter companies offer custom-made shutters that can fit windows of any form or design.

Consider the following unconventional-shaped window types that can be fitted with custom shutters:

Arched windows

Arched windows are perhaps the most straightforward window design that can be fitted with shutters and there are different ways to go about it. One is to trim and shape the slats in such a way that they match the entire shape of the arch. This is relatively easy to do but must be done carefully and with utmost precision. Hence it is work best left to professionals unless you are confident that you know what you’re doing. Of course, this is typically not an option for aluminum shutters in Australia which are difficult and expensive to reshape.

Another strategy is to separate an arched window into two sections — a standard rectangle-shaped on the lower part and custom piece for the upper arch. The two can then be fitted together to span the entire length of the window.

Curved windows

You might think that it is impossible to get affordable shutters online for arched windows, but that’s not the case at all. While it’s not practical for most people to create a window frame that fits a curved window, homeowners can take a different approach by fitting together individual frames to match the shape of arched windows. In this case, multiple frames are installed on various sections of a bowed window.

As you might imagine, the strategy described above is tedious and time-consuming. Still, the latter is more practical as opposed to insisting on a custom-made shutter for say, a curved bay window.

Angled  or slanted windows

Perhaps the most accessible window type for the installation of a window shutter is one that has slanted sides with fairly steep angles. You need only create a frame that has the same profile which should be reasonably straightforward. Just keep in mind that the slats on the shutters have to be thinner towards the slanted section of the frame to ensure a seamless fit.

So there you have it — a few ways to fit window shutters on even the most unusual window designs. As you might have already realised, it is not as difficult as most people think. If you are unsure about anything, it would be best to get help from professional contractors that you can trust to do the job right the first time regardless of what type of windows you have at home or in your place of business.
